Abstract
Why MMA Doesn’t Always Cure OSA: Soft Tissue Sleep Apnea
by Gunson Michael
Research shows that maxillomandibular advancement surgery is almost 90% effective at improving obstructive sleep apnea but less than 40% effective at curing OSA. There are three main factors that influence the effect of MMA surgery on OSA: 1) hard tissues, 2) soft tissues and 3) the nervous system. This lecture will focus on the soft tissue influences on MMA surgery and will help the clinician identify patients who are at greater risk for not achieving a cure with MMA surgery.
